Abstract
The purpose of this paper is mainly concerned with the methodological problems of the study of errors and a consideration of the application of error analysis in foreign language teaching. The data of errors made by Korean students learning English are taken for example in some categories - the us of article, preposition, tense and agreement.
The conclusions reached by this study give weight to the following arguments;
(1) A large number of errors which could be ascribed to the process of transfer seem to be found in most learners at the same stage of development and largely independent of the nature of their mother tongue.
(2) The learner's systematic errors are significant because they reveal how far he has progressed and provide useful evidence of the processes by which a language is learned.
(3) The error analysis hypothesis can be used as a criterion for the preparation of instructional materials for English language teaching in Korea
(4) And a true error analysis has much to offer because it reveals the strategies of communication used by students learning English in Korea
