Abstract
Horn (1985) divides negation into descriptive and metalinguistic negation on the basis of its truth-functionality. Yoshimura (2013) suggests another dichotomy of negation, which is based on the property of the target: if it is attributed, the negation is an objection, and if it is not, the negation is a description. She argues that her dichotomy is supported by the Japanese negative expressions nai , node wa nai and wake de wa nai . This paper examines Korean negative forms, an, -ci anh , and -nun kesi ani and suggests that an and –ci anh are used for description. The external negation -nun kesi ani is used for objection, and its targets are attributed. It then concludes that on one hand, an and -ci anh are close to Japanese nai , and on the other hand, -nun kesi ani is close to Japanese node wa nai and wake de wa nai .
