Abstract
Fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) protein plays important roles in wound healing and tissue regeneration. Collagen is clinically utilized for wound care applications in various forms. We investigated the potential effect of FGF2-functionalized collagen matrices for skeletal muscle regeneration. When C2C12 cells were treated with FGF2, cell proliferation activity was significantly increased at 3 and 5 days compared to the control (p<0.05). Cell migration activity of FGF2 was slightly higher than the control through cell migration. When FGF2 was combined with collagen matrices, protein releasing was lasted for more than 20 days. Cell proliferation activity of FGF2-functionalized collagen matrices on C2C12 cells was increased. Taken together, FGF2 stimulated C2C12 myoblast growth through promoting cells proliferation and cell migration activity. These results indicate that FGF2 stimulates skeletal muscle development and regeneration. Through the FGF2 releasing on collagen matrices and the potential effect of FGF2-functionalized collagen matrices, we expect to potential utility of FGF2-functionalized collagen matrices for skeletal muscle tissue engineering.
