Abstract
This study was carried out to understand the habitat characteristics of the macrobenthos and relationship between macrobenthic communities and environmental factors in the tidal flats facing to the open sea in the west coast of Korea. Macrobenthic invertebrates were sampled at 35 stations of Keunso Bay, 32 stations in Sapsi-do and 33 stations in Seungbong-do tidal flats west coast of Korea from April to September 2009. Samples were taken 6 times from each station using a can corer (10cm in diameter x 30cm deep) and mean grain size and total organic carbon (TOC) were measured. In Keunso Bay tidal flat, a mean grain size was 0.095mm and sediments contained a mud fraction of 31%. A mean total TOC of surface sediments was 0.57%. A total of 182 species were identified. Mean abundance and biomass were 2,731 ind./m² and 1,178.43gWWt/m² respectively. In Seungbong-do tidal flat, a mean grain size was 0.286mm and sediments contained 3.5% of much fraction. A mean TOC of surface sediments was 0.15%. A total of 182 species were identified. Mean abundance and biomass were 2,346 ind./m² and 627.34 gWWt/m² respectively. In Sapsido tidal flat, a mean grain size was 0.692mm and sediments contained mud at 11.5%. A mean TOC of surface sediments was 0.28%. A total of 171 species were identified. Mean abundance and biomass were 2,412 ind./m² and 811.99 gWWt/m² respectively. 4 ecological groups in Keunso Bay but 5 groups at Seungbong-do and Sapsi-do were observed after clustering analysis. Distributions of macrobenthos were divided by a tidal level(upper, middle, lower tidal level). Reedmarsh community were characterized by Glauconome chinensis and Assiminea japonica. The macrobenthic communities in eelgrass beds were characterized Caprella spp. and higher biodiversity.
